HOLD ON TO HER

Mawda Shawri, aged two in 2018, daughter of Phrast and Shamden and sister of Hama, was shot dead by a Belgian police officer during a migration border check on a central motorway.

In the summer of 2023, over 40 people, both undocumented and documented resident activists, assembled before the camera at La Voix des sans papiers in Brussels to stage a collective hearing of documents from and reactions to Mawda's case.

A ghostly haunting is acknowledged, caused by police impunity and lack of accountability of the state. In their refusal of such a shortage of truth and human rights the activists feel the need to explore beyond the official narratives. They produce the counter-evidence of this deadly crossing, and they practice justice as a sensuous social space for collective mourning and healing. Faced with the inability to proceed within the dominant frameworks, this hearing challenges what is visible and audible, foregrounding the opaque and the poetic.

IMPACT CAMPAIGN - Make an impact with Hold on to her with your audience!

You can organise screenings with the aim of generating attention among solidarity organisations. We believe that commitment must come from the bottom up.

We can also help organise school screenings for young people, after which the pupils get to work with an educational package. This teaching package is provided by Vluchtelingenwerk Vlaanderen, 11.11.11 and Amnesty International.

GROENKIJKERS

'Love for nature begins with careful observation' says Jacques Rovers, father of director Sanne Rovers and protector of wild plants for over 35 years. 'Because what you love, you cherish.'

This became the starting point for the film Groenkijkers, in which the director transforms her sense of powerlessness about the decline of nature into a visual ode to nature conservationists. In addition to her father, we meet the striking trio of Henk, Guido and Paul, who have been counting insects for more than 20 years; the flamboyant Herman, a landowner searching for a future-proof balance in the forest; Celine, a farmer's daughter and bird conservationist at heart; and Nicky, a likeable urban activist with a butterfly garden. We share their small discoveries and successes. But we also experience their sense of despair about whether it all still makes sense. Groenkijkers is a poetic and urgent mosaic film about love for nature, sadness for what is disappearing and hope for what can change.

IMPACT CAMPAIGN - Make an impact with Groenkijkers with your audience!

We believe that Groenkijkers offers a variety of ingredients to strengthen this movement of nature conservationists. We are therefore developing various themes, suitable for a more experienced audience, or for new green viewers.

LES DAMES BLANCHES

Simeon, a young Dominican man, begins an internship as a care worker in a residential care home in Ghent. Coming from a southern background, he approaches elderly care very differently from his colleagues, who do not entirely see things his way. However, a few eccentric old ladies become increasingly interested in him. Encouraged by the occasional whispers of his deceased grandmother, Simeon begins to question the rigid approach to elderly care that is expected of him. His journey, together with the remarkable women of the residential care centre, leads them to the only place where they can always be free: their imagination.

RUPTURE

A group of young adults from Peterbos, an often stigmatised social housing neighbourhood in Brussels, swap their everyday lives for the wild and unpredictable nature of the Spanish Pyrenees. For a week, the inexperienced hikers head into the mountains to brave snow and storms.

The extreme conditions of the hike force the youngsters to reflect on their own lives. Rupture provides insight into the often harsh reality that young adults with a migrant background have to contend with on their journey to adulthood.

THE MIND GAME

Sajid Khan Nasiri (Afghanistan) is one of the thousands of unaccompanied minor refugees who arrive in Western Europe each year seeking protection. They often endure a life-threatening journey for years, which they call 'the game'. In the country of arrival, these young refugees hope to attend school and start a new life. But then a whole new game begins: 'the mind game'. How do you, as a child, cope with the immense mental pressure of the journey, the distrustful authorities, and the distressing news from home? The Mind Game is an intimate documentary about the psychological pressure young refugees face, largely filmed from a first-hand perspective.

IMPACT CAMPAIGN - Make an impact with The Mind Game with your audience!
